A shotgun start is thirty groups asking the same question
At 7:50 the question is the same at every cart: which hole are we on? A shotgun start puts the whole field out at once, one group per starting hole, so an 18-hole course absorbs a 120-player event in a single wave and everyone finishes around the same time for lunch. The operational work is making sure every group, scorer and volunteer has the same answer to that 7:50 question.
The round decides how it starts
Each round in an event carries a start format: Shotgun or Tee Times. Choose shotgun and the tee sheet becomes a map of the course rather than a schedule, with each group assigned a starting hole.
Starting holes, including 1A and 1B
Groups are assigned starting holes on the tee sheet. A field bigger than 18 groups doubles up holes, and Parful carries the suffix that real shotguns use: two groups starting on the first hole are Hole 1A and Hole 1B, and the A group tees off first. The assignment is data, not a note in a margin, so every surface that mentions the group says the same thing.
Everyone reads the same tee sheet
A player checking their registration sees their group and starting hole on their order page. The scorer’s view labels the group with its hole. The organizer’s scoring operations view shows the field by group with those same hole labels, which is how you notice that Hole 14 has not posted since the turn.
When the field changes on the morning
Shotguns collide with reality at check-in: a no-show collapses a group, a substitution changes a name, a late foursome needs a hole. Because assignments live on the tee sheet, the fix is made once and follows through to the scorer and the board. The desk knows every player’s group and starting assignment, so redirecting people takes a glance, not a clipboard.
The course tells people where to go
Event operations tracks the physical layer too: hole markers, directional arrows, a registration banner, and sponsor tee signs. Sponsor signs are generated from the sponsorship deals that actually sold, so a Hole Sponsor’s tee sign exists because the package does, and on a 120-player shotgun most of the signs on the course are exactly these.
